Authentic Matcha Latte

Authentic Matcha Latte

A vibrant, sophisticated cafe drink. The key to a perfect matcha latte is using high-quality, vivid green culinary or ceremonial matcha, whisking it into a thick, froth-heavy shot, and pouring it over beautifully steamed milk.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 tsp Premium matcha powder
  • 2 tbsp Hot water not boiling, approx. 175°F/80°C
  • 1 tbsp Honey maple syrup, or sugar (optional)
  • 1 cup Whole milk or oat milk

Instructions

  • Sift the Matcha: Place a fine-mesh strainer over a traditional matcha bowl (Chawan) or a wide mug. Use a spoon to push the premium matcha powder through the strainer. This crucial step destroys clumps and ensures a perfectly smooth drink.
  • Whisk the Shot: Pour the hot water (make sure it is not boiling, or it will burn the tea and make it intensely bitter) directly over the sifted matcha powder. Using a traditional bamboo whisk (Chasen), whisk vigorously in a rapid ‘W’ or ‘M’ motion for about 15 to 20 seconds until a thick, vibrant green foam forms on the surface.
  • Sweeten (Optional): If you prefer a sweet latte, stir the honey, syrup, or sugar directly into the hot matcha shot until dissolved.
  • Prepare the Milk: In a saucepan or using a milk frother, heat and froth the milk until it is hot, creamy, and velvety.
  • Assemble the Latte: Pour the steamed, frothed milk into your serving mug. Slowly and carefully pour the concentrated matcha shot directly into the center of the milk, allowing the green tea to cascade beautifully through the white foam. Serve immediately.
