Sweet Inari Sushi

Make sweet, juicy, and completely vegetarian Japanese Inari Sushi pockets filled with fragrant sesame sushi rice.
Course Rice & Sushi

Notes

Inari Sushi features pockets of sweet, soy-braised deep-fried tofu (Aburaage) stuffed completely with fluffy, tangy seasoned sushi rice. A popular, vegetarian-friendly picnic and bento box staple in Japan.

Ingredients (Makes 8 Pieces)

  • 8 pre-seasoned Inari tofu pouches (Inari no Age)
  • 2 cups Cooked hot Japanese short-grain rice
  • 1.5 tbsp Sushi vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare sushi rice: Pour hot cooked rice into a bowl, drizzle sushi vinegar evenly, and fold using a slicing motion. Toss in toasted sesame seeds and mix gently. Allow the rice to cool down to room temperature.
  2. Open tofu pouches: Carefully open each seasoned tofu pouch with your fingers to create a pocket. Gently squeeze out any excess sweet braising liquid.
  3. Stuff the pouches: Wet your hands slightly. Shape a small handful of sushi rice into a neat oblong ball (about the size of a golf ball). Push the rice ball gently deep into the corners of the tofu pouch.
  4. Fold & Clean: Fold the open edges of the tofu pouch over to cleanly seal the rice inside. Place fold-side down on a beautiful platter and serve cold or at room temperature.
